Children are not born all at the same time. The natural grouping in children is in multi-age units, each being developed and growing at his own unique rate. At Roger Williams Academy we seek to maintain that same natural arrangement. Students who are ready to learn to read are grouped with those who have just learned to read in the Lower Division . Those who read, but are not in the Upper Division (High School) are grouped in the Middle Division. If sufficient Middle Division students enroll, the classes are divided into Upper form and Lower form, Middle Division. What this means is that students learn in a multi-age group of peers, just as most of them do at home.
Students who are not in the pre-reading or early reading division will study in their own "student office", his or her materiel will be worked on in the office, and when the student requires help he or she will raise a flag. The teacher will then respond to the flag and help the student. The work of each student will be closely monitored by the Teacher.
Student to Teacher ratio is never more than 12 to 1
Students in the Upper Division may be enrolled in any of the three offered tracks.
Honors Track: the student is a Sophomore who has shown that he or she can maintain an academic average of 94% or higher in his or her Freshman year. The student will contract for an "A", and will repeat any modules of learning necessary to maintain an "A" average. The student should remain "in balance" (all subjects are at the same level), and "at level" (Student is at the appropriate grade level).
College Preparatory: Contains the content of the HonorsTrack without the mandatory "A" contract. Students in the curriculum that we use who have completed this track usually score in the 97th percentile on College Entrance Exams.
General Diploma: This track has less Math and Science. It contains the subject matter required by the State of California but with more English and Social Studies andForiegn Language . The student must master 80% of the content of the courses in order to graduate.

Students in the Middle Division are readers who can read without assistance. They usually are from third to eighth grade. Each student has his or her private student office, where he or she can avoid the distraction of the group while learning, yet be able to take part in a planned group dynamic by simply turning their chairs around. Each student is tutored seperately as needed. The Teacher will patrol the classroom to make certain that each student is working, and is not "stuck". A student who is on, say, page 30 for 30 minutes is stuck. The teacher then, intervenes to determine the nature of the problem. Physical Education is the Royal Canadian Air Force Conditioning Program ages 6 to 18 all year long with softball, basketball, and archery-- each three months long.
In Lower Division the students are from Kindergarten to second grade. The teacher-student ration is usually 1-5, and will not exceed 1-8. The student is taught the phonic alphabet, and to put letter symbols together to begin reading and writing words. Each morning, all of the phonic sounds are rehearsed, and new letters and their sounds are taught with recitation, singing, and other activities. Skill development exercizes are engaged in involving following lines with a pencil in tracing and mazes, cutting on lines, and coordination development exercizes.
When the student is fully able to work in the Middle School classroom, he or she is promoted during the Thursday Chapel hour.
An ESL student will spend an hour each day learning Phonics, and studying the English language. Older students, whose parents agree, may sign up for English in our Rosetta Stone (a fee of $325 to cover the cost of the program will be charged.) The day to day work of the ESL student will be in the Division that is appropriate to the student's tested abilities.
Physical Education in the gym will consist of conditioning using the Royal Canadian Exercise program which is graded starting at the age of 6 this will be all year long . We will also teach the children to play baseball, archery and badminton..
Creative Writing and Literature courses are offerred at all "reading" levels. This extraordinary curriculum not only teaches appreciation of fine literature and use of imagination in creative writing, it teaches logic. This course is recommended for all students at "level 3" and higher.
Animal Science is offered as an extra course for those can achieve higher than the standanrd core curriclum along with a course in Bible reading at no additional charge.
When the founders of the "School of Tomorrow" system of learning were developing the curriculum, they asked several very well known and successful people what the most important characteristic that could be learned was. Without consulting with each other, the answer was "Wisdom".
When God asked King Solomon what he would like God to bestow upon him as a gift, Solomon responded: "Wisdom to rule this, thy people." God was pleased with Solomon's answer and gave it to him, along with great wealth and power.
Wisdom is not a measure of intelligence. It is a trait that will cause good choices to be made. By including sixty charactor traits into our curriculum to be learned over and over again through the years, we are attempting to teach Wisdom.
